NAWWAR SHUKRIAH ALI
Artist - BONO STELLAR
Nawwar Shukriah Ali (b. 1985), better known as Bono Stellar, is a multidisciplinary artist based in the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In her drawings, installations, and photography, Bono merges references to art history, her memories, and personal reflections on her past, present and future—all that compose the very fabrics of her life. Working primarily with iridescent films, lights, mirrors, and plexiglass, her goal is to create work which appeals to the imagination and the senses, abandoning fidelity to the visible world in favour of exploring abstractions in truth and transparencies. She articulates her personal struggles with the contemporary Malaysian and Malay woman identity—a complex mix of strong and soft, toughness and vulnerability—through references to local contexts and customs, reimagined with interactive technology.
The artist is inspired by architecture—and the hugely influential collective Archigram—and movements such kinetic art and op art, the Bauhaus school, the Memphis design aesthetic, as well as by film and music, and juggernauts in the fields of design, amongst them M.C. Escher to Michel Gondry, from Frank Stella and James Turrell to Charles and Ray Eames.
The artist considers herself one of many rising new media artists currently working in Kuala Lumpur. She is fueled by collaborations with experts in new technology mediums, working in electric paint, sensor, and the like. A keen observer of people and places, armed with a lifelong fascination with the seaside —having spent her formative years growing up in Kuala Terengganu—there is an undercurrent of fluidity, perpetual movement and unrest in her body of work. She is best known for her hanging mobiles, a playground for the interplay between light and shadow, motion and movement.
Bono is the founder of Stellar Design and Stellar Studio. She also founded Make It Happen! two years ago, in hopes that it can be a platform to educate her fellow creatives, peers, and masses on the importance of the creative process, and making it happen. She holds a degree in architecture and a Masters in Art and Design: Product Design, and has lectured at a local university on the subject of Design and History of Architecture. She has exhibited at Hin Bus Depot in Penang, IP Karnival, Urbanscapes Festival, and more.
